switch 2012, Pearse Street, Nenagh - David Theobald: Workers Playtime
switch,
Nenagh's unique, annual visual art event is now underway. Launched last
Sunday with a programmed tour, participants were led through Mitchell,
Kenyon and Pearse streets switching on the artworks from eight international
artists and taking a peak into the past using ‘time machines’.
Event curators Triona Ryan and Harald Turek
relayed the history of the switch
event and guided the large gathering through present and past switch art
works hosted in Nenagh, with stops along the way to view images of Nenagh’s
streets long ago using slide viewers, compiled by Brendan Treacy for the
tour this year from his incredible photographic archives.
At each location on the walking tour, Ryan and Turek
narrated the story of the event, discussing the history of each space and
encouraging a sense of remembering, sharing gems of local folklore, such as
the stumbled upon story of the Slow Bicycle race that took place in the town
in 1962, with the winner, Joe Pearce, taking an incredible four hours to
cycle from one end of Pearse Street to the other.
switch continues from twilight to midnight every evening until Sunday
February the 12th with a final artist led tour scheduled for
6.30pm on Sunday 12th February leaving from the Ormond Hotel.
Members of the public can catch Flatforms “balancing man” on Mitchell Street or exchange glances with market traders from foreign lands in the work of Mark Neville on Pearse Street. Down at the end of Kenyon Street, the slow and balanced moves of martial art are filmed by the artist Paul Grimmer while tucked up on Silver Street the daffodils can be found slowly unfurling their bloom.
Commenting on the event, Melanie Scott, Arts officer North Tipperary County
Council said,
"switch is
a unique project which brings the best of international contemporary video
art into our everyday lives and brings art onto the streets. This project
could not be presented without the support of the local business community
who get behind the project each year to make it happen and for which we are
very grateful.”
Members of the public who would like to
conduct their own walking tour can use the printed Map and
switch’s yellow catalogue, which gives more information on this
year’s artworks. The yellow catalogue can be picked up from either the Arts

Running daily from Sunday 5th – Sunday 12th
of February, each evening from twilight to midnight,
switch will showcase these 8 captivating projected
artworks. Members of the public will be able to view varied art works such
as the video art work of artist Natalie Lavoie which depicts the frozen
Mackenzie river near her home in the remote region of the North West
Territories in Canada. Another work equally diverse in its origin was made
by artist and botanist Fergus Fullarton Pegg from Scotland using time lapse
photography.
switch has gained remarkable momentum since the event first launched in 2008 with the fondly remembered work the girl on the swing shown in Dunnes. Back then there were 80 submissions from artists competing to participate in its first year. Building on the success of previous switch events this number has almost doubled, with 150 submissions in this, the fourth edition. To date switch has featured international artists from as far as Canada, Finland, France, the UK, Sweden, Turkey, USA, the Netherlands, Austria, – as well as some home-grown talent, David Ian Bickley from Cork and local filmmaker Kevin Minogue from Ardcroney. The event is designed to appeal to everyone, not just those interested in art. switch is an inspiring and revealing way to explore Nenagh, as in addition to the screenings of the artwork, programme curators Triona Ryan and Harald Turek, will lead two unique walking tours around the eight spaces.
Programme curator Triona Ryan says
“The walking tours are an opportunity for local people to take a journey
through history and culture, uncovering ideas and information, as well as an
opportunity to engage in the future. It is also the perfect time to learn
more about both contemporary art and how, where and why
switch takes place in Nenagh. This year we have enjoyed the
opportunity to work with local Archivist Brendan Treacy in selecting a range
of historic images of Nenagh, which will augment the walking tour titled: An
Eye to Art and a View of the Past.”
The switch event
will be launched on Sunday 5th February at 6.30pm at the Ormond
Hotel, Kenyon Street, Nenagh.
The launch
will immediately be followed by the first walking tour, leaving at 6.45pm.
The tour will take approximately ninety minutes. The second walking tour will take place on Sunday 12th
February, departing at 6.30pm from the Ormond Hotel.
Members of the public who would like to
conduct their own walking tour can pick up a printed Map and
switch’s yellow catalogue, which gives more information on this
years artworks from either the Arts Office at the Civic Offices, the Nenagh
Arts Centre or the Nenagh Library from 1st February.

Fracture Youth Theatre, under the direction of Youth Theatre Facilitators Joanne Quinn and Aoife Carry present “It only ever happens in the movies.....” devised by Mikel Murfi & John Taite, along with the cast of NYT 2011 in The Source Arts Centre, Thurles on Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th February 2012 at 8.00pm.
The play is a story about love, teenage love. Derek is 17. He likes his laptop, ice cream, movies and DIY. By his own admission, he doesn’t do girls very successfully. It’s July. Derek knows love is in the air and he’d rather not spend another summer unkissed and unloved. The one thing, the only thing that Derek has going for him is that he is mildly inventive and he has just come up with a plan to find love! Using classic romance movies as his inspiration, Derek begins to put his materplan in action. Expect classic romantic comedy, expect awful chat up lines as love starved Derek begins his quest to find summer love.
Fracture Youth Theatre encourages young people (aged 13 – 17 years) to enjoy drama and related activities through participation in theatrical performance, workshops, games and improvisations. It also gives drama instruction in an enjoyable environment in which members can learn and thrive. Weekly workshops will resume on the 3rd March next for young people aged 13-17 years old in the Thurles area. Participants meet once a week during term time and are introduced to all aspects of Drama and Theatre, so if you think you might like to join, why not come along to this show to get a flavour of what it’s all about. New members are welcome to come to a taster workshop on the 3rd March before committing to a full term.
Show tickets cost €7.00 and booking is available from the Box Office at The Source Arts Centre at 0504 – 90340. Fracture Youth Theatre is run by the Arts Office of North Tipperary County Council as part of the County Arts Development Programme with support from The Arts Council. Glasgow-based artist Mark
Neville makes
lens-based works which have been realised and disseminated in a large array
of contexts, as both still and moving image pieces. His film and
photography-based work has consistently looked to subvert the traditional
role of social documentary practice, seeking to find new ways to empower the
position of its subject over that of the author. Often working with closely
knit working communities, in a collaborative process intended to be of
direct, practical benefit to the subject, his photographic projects to date
have frequently made the towns he portrays the primary audience for the
work. Points of reference for his work might include the ideas of Henri
Lefebvre, or the art works of Martha Rosler, John Berger, or Hans Haacke.

Artists
& Filmmakers working with moving image are invited to take part in
the Winterworkshop with Mark Neville. This opportunity is open to both
emergent and experienced practitioners.This
is a very rare opportunity to take part in an extended investigation into
some of the ideas, issues, and technical strategies which inform Mark's
work.
This will take the form of an open forum and workshop situation set up over
the three days. Neville will bring books, cameras, lighting systems and
other props to explain the ideas which inform his international practice. On
each of the days, Neville will begin with a talk about one aspect of his
work, and its broader relationship to contemporary art practice and theory,
followed by a group discussion. In the afternoons the participants will talk
to the group about their own practice, and are then asked to realise a short
10 minute work of their own on site, which they will then present. With
regard to this, participants should bring their own moving image camera
equipment. A projector and/or monitor will be provided by the Arts Centre to
view the works. Each day will deal with a different issue pertaining to the
moving image in contemporary art.There
are limited opportunities for artists to talk about their work among
themselves in a critical environment.
The aim of this workshop is to raise the profile of artists film in the
collaborative sphere by bringing together 10 artist/participants, at all
different stages of career and development, for group discussion of their
work. In a context of mutual trust and respect participants will present
their artwork/project for critical response. Through
this unique process we aim to identify the best imaginative processes and
skills.
Dates:
February 6th, 7th & 8th / 10.30am-6.00pm
Location: Heritage
Centre, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, Ireland
