Introduction to North Tipperary

The County of Tipperary is divided into two administrative areas - North Tipperary and South Tipperary. Both have a separate County Council, each with its own distinctive culture and identity. North Tipperary County Council was originally established under the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 and was known at that time as Tipperary (North Riding) County Council. The name changed to North Tipperary County Council under the Local Government Act 2001.

North Tipperary County Council provides a range of services for the administrative area of North Tipperary. The headquarters are located at the Civic Offices, Limerick Road, Nenagh and there are area offices in Borrisokane, Newport, Roscrea and Thurles.

With a population in excess of 65,000, North Tipperary has, in recent years, experienced substantial residential growth as evident from the level of planning applications received. The central location of the County, the development of a number of thriving towns, the vast range of amenities and natural environment, the location of and proximity to first class educational facilities, the availability of housing and the proximity to a number of cities make it a very attractive place in which to live, work or visit.

The County is still unspoilt and is blessed with many amenities ranging from Lough Derg to Mountain Walks to Historical Trails within the many Towns. The largest inland marina in Ireland is located in Dromineer and marinas are also located in the villages located along Lough Derg including Terryglass (winner of the National Tidy Towns overall Category on a number of occasions), Ballina and Garrykennedy. The Village of Birdhill won the overall title of Tidiest Village in the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2006, 2007 and 2008.  In 2007 they were nominated to represent Ireland in the Entente Florale Competition and were awarded a gold medal.  Ballina and Roscrea have Heritage Town status.

North Tipperary is a modern, thriving County which boasts a beautiful, unspoilt countryside, rich in sporting, cultural, historical and heritage tradition.

Welcome to the Premier County.
