The onus rests on each individual to ensure that he/she is registered to
vote..
Remember, you cannot vote unless you are registered.
The Register comprises four categories of electors. A person's citizenship determines their category and the type of elections at which they may vote as in the table below:
| Citizenship | Type of Election at which eligible to vote | Letter on Register |
| Irish Citizens | All elections and referenda | - |
| British Citizens | Dáil, European & Local Elections | DD |
| Other EU Citizens | European and Local Elections | E |
| Non-EU Citizens | Local Government Elections only | L |
Note: The letter 'S' placed against an elector's name signifies that the person concerned is either a person entitled to vote by post only or a special voter.
In order to qualify for entry onto the Register, a person must comply with the relevant statutory provisions:
18 years or over on 155th February in the year in which the Register comes into force (i.e. 15th February 2010 to qualify for entry onto the 2010/2011 Register) Ordinarily resident in the constituency on the qualifying date (1 September in the year proceeding the year in which the Register comes into force)
Since 2004, registration authorities are required to publish two versions of the register the full register and the edited register.
The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote and can only be used for an electoral or other statutory purpose. The edited register contains the names and addresses of persons whose details can be used for a purpose other than an electoral or other statutory purpose e.g. for direct marketing use by a commercial or other organisation. Every elector is given a choice as to whether they wish to be included or not.
