1. Introduction

North Tipperary is committed to placing sustainable development at the heart of its decision-making. This section of the Plan is in compliance with the requirement of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 for plans to include information on the likely significant effects on the environment of implementing the Development Plan Policies.

This requirement has been fulfilled in the Plan in the form of a checklist that will help to ensure that all the policy objectives are assessed against their likely impact on the environment, and to minimise adverse environmental impacts on implementing the Plan.

This process is not a new one but it will be the first time that the County Development Plan for North Tipperary will be assessed in this way. To date no ministerial guidelines are available as to the procedure for such an assessment, therefore the following checklist has been prepared in line with the procedure adopted in heritage appraisals.
