10 August 2011 : Public Participation in the identification of Bathing Waters
North Tipperary County Council is inviting public participation in the identification of Bathing Waters under the Bathing Waters Directive and the Bathing Water Quality Regulations 2008 (SI No 79 of 2008). The Directive requires that water quality at all designated bathing waters meet stringent microbiological standards in order to protect the health of people who choose to bathe there. The new Directive and Regulations require public participation in the identification process. This consultation process provides the public with an opportunity to:- comment on existing designated bathing waters with a view to continuation of designation
- comment on other bathing waters not currently designated but which may be considered for designation.
Information on existing designated bathing waters is available on the Bathing Water website and also on the Beach Awards website.
In making your submission in relation to the identification of bathing water sites, it might be helpful to consider the following factors:
- · Past trends
- · Infrastructure or facilities provided (including accessibility)
- · Safety considerations

The presence of Algae Bloom was observed by North Tipperary County Council on Lough Derg in recent days. Blue green algae can produce harmful toxins. Such toxins have been known to be harmful to animals that drink the water and skin rashes have occurred in humans following contact. The bloom is most easily recognised when it forms a bright pea-green paint like scum on or close to the shoreline. Notices are in place at various locations around Lough Derg informing the public of the algal blooms. The public are advised to please exercise caution
- contact with this bloom should be avoided as it may cause skin irritation.
- keep all animals especially dogs away from the affected area. ensure animals have an alternative source of drinking water.

North Tipperary County Council recently signed a contract with Priority Construction Limited for the capping of Cell 9 at Ballaghveny Landfill, Ballymackey.
The works consist of the remediation of the now closed waste containment cell 9 of the landfill and will involve regrading the existing cell profile and capping the cell to provide landfill gas collection and surface water drainage systems.
